Type 2 diabetes: with a proper weight loss, remission is at your fingertips
According to a study published on the British Medical Journal and co-ordinated by Mike Lean of the University of Glasgow, it is enough to lose at least 15 pounds of weight and type 2 diabetes, generally perceived as progressive and incurable, can disappear for many people. “According to current guidelines, the reduction in blood glucose and cardiovascular risk can be achieved mainly by following pharmacological therapy and a healthy lifestyle,” the authors write, pointing out, however, that despite this, many patients develop complications, meeting an expectation of life shorter than about six years compared to non-diabetics.
“Conversely, more and more scientific evidence demonstrates that weight loss is associated with an increase in life expectancy in diabetic people, and that a weight loss of approximately 15 kg often results in total remission of symptoms of type 2 diabetes” resumes the researcher. And he adds: “Reaching remission does not only benefit health, but it also produces a strong sense of personal accomplishment and enhancement, also removing the stigma of overweight and obesity.”
